Okay, okay, we all know that you can do pretty much all of the effects in Photoshop - or at least my wife can because I don't have the patience to learn it all...However, there's still a place for taking the shot al fresco as it were. For me it's just a bit more authentic and if you get it right, I reckon its better than post production. This Neewer filter is up to their usual standard which is to say, excellent. I've got quite a few of their filters because they are both fantastic value and at my level as good as anything costing far, far more.Quality of manufacture is excellent especially considering the cost. Frankly, why pay more?

Had a play with this and its got a unique feel to it.Perfect for a discreet dreamy effect. Like the soft dark 1/4 diffusion but for daylight rather than night.Maybe an Angel visits and you want a slight glimmer, enough to plant a sead with the viewer without screaming "That's the Angel!".Nice glass and a nice box to keep it safe, I mean, how meny times dose one film an angel...?5*****

This 1/4 white pro-mist is as good as the ones from the best brands out there. It is virtually neutral with no noticeable color shift (measured in a colorimeter). The filter eats just 1/10 of a stop, which is pretty standard. The effect is nice and smooth, giving the image a silky creamy look, especially in the highlights. The quality of the filter itself is very good. Great glass with a solid metallic ring and it's also very light and thin. N noticeable vignetting effect even when using a wide-angle lens.I definitely recommend this product.

You won't notice much of an effect if you use this on a wide-angle lens, not for portraits, and on an overcast day (no specular highlights/low contrast). It's just like a subtle matte effect in that scenario. This kind of filter works better on telephoto portraits and/or scenes with contrasty lighting/specular highlights.I attached screenshots of four unedited raw photos in an editing program so you can see the difference in highlights detail loss (in red) and shadow detail loss (in blue), plus their histograms. These are two sets, both shot with a 35mm on an overcast day, one at f/8 and the other at f/1.4.You can see the subtle matte effect not only in the filter bringing up the shadows on the wheelchair where there was detail loss without the filter, but also in the dark parts of the trees getting a little washout.I think black and white diffusion filters are a little more useful for videography, where it's a lot more convenient to get a systematic effect in-camera. But if you know you're taking portraits and you want smoother skin, or you are capturing flames/lights at night and want a glow, this is a nice photography filter. It's easier to understand the skin-smoothing effect if you think of skin pores as being like pockmarks on the moon. They're a series of contrasty highlights and shadows. A diffusion filter either spreads out the shadows (black diffusion) or spreads out the highlights (white diffusion) to lower the contrast, making the pores/bumps not stand out as much.I have a small number of beautiful pictures I've taken with a diffusion filter, but they were planned—like a birthday party where I knew I'd get a shot of someone about to blow out their cake candle, or a portrait I want a softer look with. Otherwise, I don't think I'll use this filter without a specific idea in mind, since I can add a subtle matte effect in post. So just think about whether the effect you want can be easily handled in software, or whether this kind of filter fits a specific look you want with specific scenarios.

I haven't particularly used a white soft filter before so this review is more from the overall quality and showing the main effect through different stages of lighting. Got a few other filters from some of the bigger brands though. The materials are good, apart from the ring screw I found to be a little scratchy compared to some of the others I've used. It doesn't get stuck though but never tighten them too much is always the best method to use.The image does get slightly softer but that's part and parcel of the white soft filters. To smooth out edges for skin, soften light and diffuse it more than you would normally get.The best application is with video for specific feelings to the scenes but you can use the same principals for photography with stylistic choices. The diffusion is pretty nice but not over done. You typically tend to get better diffusion with sharpness retention from the bigger brands but the 1/4 here works very well considering. There's not really a colour shift that I could notice either other than contract for blacks and dark colours.I haven't been able to get out to shoot landscape with the weather conditions being pretty temperamental where I am but I will absolutely be getting out when I can catch a nice sunrise or where I can get some good natural light. So the testing I've done is at home with a couple of extra light sources. One is an orange light and one is a green/tealish coloured light. Nothing is edited in post. Taken purely from RAW to highest quality JPG.The first one shows just natural light. The second the lights were a fair ratio distance away, facing 45 degrees away from the subject. The third was at an 90 degree angle at a slightly closer distance. The fourth was with the light sources at that same 90 degrees angle but in frame. The fifth was with the light sources facing more directly towards but also slightly behind the subject. As you can see. There's not really a massive difference in natural lighting when there isn't a light source in shot or directed towards your subject. Which is normal. It does soften the image as well as the fluff on the toy showing what sort of thing it will do for faces. It does keep a relatively sharp image though since you can still see the single strands at this distance away. I will add more if I can find a model for it but I'm typically a landscape and abstract photographer. The second image is similar to the first although there is some diffusion happening where the light sources are hitting, although subtle you can see this in the bokeh on the left with the orange light. It's slightly flattened off the bokeh effect from the first. A subtle but nice effect when used in certain situations. The third is where you really start to see one of the main effects starting to happen. As you can see the green isn't particularly a strong colour in terms of light but it's picking up some diffusion. The orange is really starting to pop. The sharpness is ever so slightly starting to get a bit softer but still reasonable if you look at the belly and sides. The fourth one shows how much it enhances the green light with the diffusion. In the left image you can barely tell it's green but the right on its bringing the colour back in. The lights are obviously blown out but I kept everything in the optimal spot according to the graph to keep it as fair as possible. You get a little bit of sharpness back in front where the light isn't being diffused before it's reaching the subject. So trial and error might be a good shout if you're unsure on the effects of light and the filter effects. The fifth one shows nicely how lighting in dark conditions will effect the blacks quite heavily. So in sunny shots for portraits you'll find the blacks being lightened considerably more. It also shows the effect of direct light towards the filter will do. Quite drastic but I personally think it's actually a great thing to use in certain circumstances and artistic choices. I can see this being effective with abstract photography to give a little something extra. You can see the sharpness around the belly and sides is considerable lesser than the no filter here but you can still get some nice shots even with direct shots. A soft image doesn't mean it's a bad image! Well... within reason.Overall, if you're new to these filters or maybe you want to experiment with one with your style. I personally think it's a great lens. Retains sharpness fairly well although softness is kind of what you're going to be trying to do somewhat unless diffusion is your main aim. But to get the diffusion, you will get some softness. I personally don't think there's enough softness here to call it not good. Reasonable enough but I guess it all depends on the situation and the aim you're trying to achieve.Great to just play about with. With natural light on an overcast day you can retain most of the image quality in order to go for that skin softening. Bright daylight or direct in shadows will give some effect but this is where you can at least play about for a reasonable price. At £44.99, it's fairly reasonable price point. Although every tool has it's place, this is one that definitely has it's place! If you're looking for the best quality, you're probably not even looking at these filters from Neewer. If you are looking, I could absolutely recommend it based on your needs. Require sharpness? Probably not, there are better options. Just want a fun filter to mess around with? Absolutely!

At this point I own and use a lot of Neewer gear, including a handful of other filters. I use them primarily for video in a professional setting. This is another great filter. At 1/4 strength, the effect is subtle, and depends on the intensity and nature of your light sources. Different lighting conditions will create different results.I like these for taking the super sharp, clinical edge off my modern lenses, and adding just a bit of vintage charm to footage. I don't use them for everything, but they are a useful tool in my kit. This price makes good diffusion available for much cheaper than the big name brands, and the quality of materials and effect is absolutely there. When used properly, you'd be hard-pressed to tell the difference in terms of results.
